Blog 12! Arguing for art — Barclay style

Mark Boslough and Jonah Lehrer both contemplate the importance of the relationship between science and the arts. Boslough, being a science nerd, believes the scientific method is the core to new discoveries. In his article, “We Must Protect U.S. Investment In Scientific Knowledge” Boslough exercises his concern that the arts are threatening the credibility of cold, hard science; he fears “Science is now under attack from many directions.” This may be a dramatic representation of his thoughts, but Boslough is obtuse in his assessment about science being threatened. On the other hand, Jonah Lehrer declares art enhances our ability to understand science. In his essay “To Answer our Most Fundamental Questions, Science Needs to Find a Place for the Arts” Lehrer concedes, “…we will need to bridge our cultural divide. By heeding the wisdom of the arts, science can gain the kinds of new insights and perspectives that are the seeds of scientific progress.” Lehrer is implying that the sciences are not flawed, but they can be drastically improved with the incorporation of this new perspective. Although it is popular to think science and art are separate entities, I agree with Lehrer that science can have an entirely new result if we incorporate art.
