Thoughts On Paper – Messy Brainstorming

Brainstorm for art Essay

Art could mean many different things. No matter the interpretation I’ve always liked ‘art’. I love that its a form of expression. It’s hard to explain to someone why you like a certain color or pattern so much because you’re using the right side of your brain; the creative hemisphere. You feel a certain way when you see certain art pieces and no explanation is needed. I always feel an incredible amount of joy when I hear a friend play music or see an incredible painting that looks like a photograph. Nothing has to be said or explained, the feeling is effortless and incredibly enjoyable.

If you told me there’s an organization that does everything they can to support those in need, I’d be ecstatic. Such an incredible mission to be accomplished! How can I help!? BUT, after reading Southan’s text, I cannot help but associate the EA community with a negative feeling. Their rubric checks out; help as many people as possible over the course of your lifetime. However, going on to suggest you should sacrifice your dreams to do more ‘good’ then the next Joe Shmoe is absolutely absurd.  After watching those TED talks, it’s clear to me that art is good. Art is certainly not a waste of time. Not everyone has to be an extremest, not YET at least…

The brainstorming session helped me get some of my ideas out onto paper, so I can organize them and start to write a paper. It’s always been helpful to brainstorm or free write before jumping into an essay so your thoughts don’t jump around too much, it’s easy to see them laid out and organize them after. I don’t like generating sentences right away, so I didn’t. But, for now I want to incorporate happiness and emotion into this essay. Still have my doubts on if it’ll work. I feel as though these communities that the EA are helping rely heavily on art to give them a sense of community and make them happy. I’d love to use Ben Zander as the happiness perpetrator, he bounced around the stage keeping everyone entertained and didn’t lose his energy once. It’s one thing to claim that the altruists are saving all these lives, but what does that life look like with no art?
